I use mine on a networked harddrive. Set it up as a media server and I can watch any movies i have stored on my computer in another room on my PS3. It can be done over WiFi but the connection gets slow sometimes. Also the PS3 can play almost any file format. I watch my anime in FLV, MKV, OGG formats and my movies in AVI and MP4 formats.

yes same way he uses his usb to put movies on it.
the ps3 actually plays more video types than the 360 and the xmb is easier to navigate than the nxe dashboard

yer, get any mp4 movie, put it on a usb drive, insert it in2 the ps3, go in2 the movie section>go 2 ur usb drive(dont enter it) press triangle, and click show all

that or put it in a file named VIDEO, or MOVIE i forget which
